Coffee freshness and storage

A few simple habits help protect the aroma and flavour of your coffee after you open the bag.

Keep it sealed cool and dry

  • Limit air exposure. Keep coffee in an airtight, opaque container and close it after each use.
  • Choose a cool, dark cupboard. Keep it away from sunlight, the stove, steam and other heat sources.
  • Keep moisture out. Use a clean, dry scoop and avoid leaving the container open.
  • Grind what you need. If you buy whole beans, grind your portion just before brewing.

Choose a quantity you will use

Coffee gradually loses aroma and flavour after roasting and opening. If a large bag takes a long time to finish, try a smaller size more often. Freshness depends on the packaging, storage and whether the coffee is whole bean or ground; follow any date and storage guidance on your bag.

Make everyday storage simple

A cool cupboard is a practical place for the coffee you use daily. Coffee can absorb moisture and odours, so take care with refrigeration or freezing. If you freeze beans, use genuinely airtight containers and limit exposure to condensation.

Already buying ground coffee? Keep it well sealed and scoop out only what you need for the next brew.
